The Alameda Fire Department has been in the ambulance transport business since the late 1970's. This service commenced with a single ambulance staffed by two Firefighters/ Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) who provided emergency transports within the city of Alameda. Since that time, the transport service has grown with the needs of the community to three full-time, Advanced Life Support (ALS) ambulances.
Currently, all engine companies and ambulances are staffed with at least one paramedic each, providing quick ALS service to all parts of the city.
Along with responding to EMS calls, the ambulances are also a key part of a structure fire response. The firefighters assigned to the ambulances are tasked to take part in suppression efforts, as well as treat injured residents or firefighters.
The EMS Division provides members with training to keep both EMTs and paramedics current with the latest skills and techniques. The EMTs have a modular recertification training to maintain EMT -D as outlined by the Alameda County EMS District. The paramedics must also maintain their license by recertification in Pediatric Advance Life Support, Adult Cardiac Life Support, and Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support. Emergency Medical Services are evaluated on a continuous basis by using a Quality Assurance review process.
