Licensing Your Pet

dog_licenseAll cats and dogs four months of age and older, living in the City of Alameda, are required to be licensed. To purchase a license, you must show a current rabies vaccination certificate. Since the first rabies shot is good for one year, you may only purchase a one-year license for one year. Subsequent rabies shots last three years, so you may purchase a one, two or three year license.

If your pet is spayed or neutered, Alameda discounts licenses fees. Senior citizens, 62 years of age or older, also qualify for discounts. If your income is at the very-low income level as outlined by the Federal Department of Housing & Urban Development for the Oakland area, you may qualify for a free license. Friends of the Alameda Animal Shelter accept cash, checks, Master Cards, Visa Cards and Discover Cards.

Regular Fee
One Year $25.00
Two Year $33.00
Three Year $42.00

Spayed/Neutered
One Year $10.00
Two Year $16.00
Three Year $21.00

Senior Citizen Fees
One Year $12.00
Two Year $16.00
Three Year $20.00

The law requires you to license your pet 30 days after taking up residency in the City of Alameda and/or once your pet is four months of age.

A $10.00 late fee may be assessed if you do not license your pet in that time period or if you do not renew your pet license after a 45-day grace period has elapsed.

The fee to obtain a duplicate tag is $5.00.
