More Information on the Youth Advisory Commission

Established by City Ordinance, this 11-member Commission was established to give youth a voice in Alameda's city government. The Commission acts in an advisory capacity and makes policy recommendations to the Mayor and City Council regarding Alameda youth issues.

Youngsters between the ages of 14-20 who are residents of Alameda are invited to apply. All Commissioners are appointed by the Mayor; Commissioners may serve a maximum of two 2-year terms. Participants in the program have the opportunity to learn leadership skills, learn about city government, earn community service hours, meet other youth leaders, make their voices heard, and make a difference in their community.

Responsibilities of a Youth Commissioner

• Attend all meetings of the Youth Commission
• Participate actively in the Youth Commission’s work 
• Share the work of the Youth Commission with the constituents you represent 
• Bring issues and concerns from your constituents to the Youth Commission
  

Time Commitment (approximately six hours per month)

• Required to attend all regularly scheduled Commission meetings
• Meetings are on the second Tuesday of each month in City Hall, Room 360 at 5:00 p.m.
• An orientation at the beginning of the year 
• Additional 2-3 hours a month to participate on sub-committees or work on projects
