Ages 14 to 20

Youth Voices Needed

The Mayor and City Council have adopted an ordinance to create the Youth Advisory Commission. The commission consists of 11 members representing Alameda's diversity. Youth between the ages of 14 and 20 who are residents of Alameda or attend school in Alameda are invited to apply.


The purpose of the Youth Commission is

  • To represent youth voice in Alameda city government
  • To act in an advisory capacity, review, and make recommendations about municipal matters referred to the Youth Commission by the Mayor, City Council, and other City of Alameda commissions.
  • To make policy recommendations to the Mayor and City Council about issues of concern to Alameda youth.

Responsibilities of a Youth Commissioner:

  • Attend all meetings of the Youth Commission
  • Participate actively in the Youth Commission’s work
  • Share the work of the Youth Commission with the constituents you represent
  • Bring issues and concerns from your constituents to the Youth Commission

Time Commitment:

  • Required to attend all regularly scheduled Commission meetings (Meetings are on the second Tuesday of each month in City Hall, Room 360 at 5:00 p.m.)
  • An orientation at the beginning of the year
  • Additional 2 to 3 hours a month to participate on sub-committees or work on projects
  • Overall time commitment is expected to be approximately 6 hours per month
  • Commissioners will be appointed for a term by the Mayor.
  • Commissioners may serve a maximum of two, 2-year terms

  • Create Commission By-Laws
  • Serve as youth representatives or liaisons to other city commissions, agencies, or community organizations
  • Host a Youth Town Hall meeting
  • Organize a youth conference
